How Testosterone Levels Lessen with Age
Although many of us have heard of hormonal changes happening while we age, most of us associate that description only with women. While it’s true that women go through significant hormonal changes with age during menopause, men can also see changes in their hormone levels as they age. Here in San Diego, testosterone therapy is one of the primary tools used to treat andropause, the name given to a set of symptoms experienced by men as a result of aging and hormonal changes which is very similar to menopause in women.

The Importance of Testosterone
Testosterone is a vital component of the male body that’s produced in both the pituitary gland and the testicles. Although produced in both men and women, it is far more prevalent in men. Testosterone levels circulating through the body regulate many aspects of physical development, particularly those that relate to sex drive and sexual maturity. Testosterone levels affect the development of primary sexual characteristics as well as secondary sexual characteristics, like the growth of facial hair. Testosterone levels also impact red blood cell levels, muscle build and bone density.

When testosterone levels fall too low, imbalances manifest within the body. Physically, men may notice changes in fat distribution, sexual changes like lowered libido and mood swings or other emotional changes. Hormone replacement therapy can help restore testosterone back to normal functional levels.

Andropause
In women, menopause is associated with early middle age to retirement age. In men, however, hormone fluctuations begin much earlier in life, often beginning the initial decline in testosterone production as early as their 30s. In fact, not only are testosterone levels declining, but the receptors within the body that respond to testosterone become less efficient as well.

The symptoms of andropause are many and varied, although some are quite similar to complaints given by women going through menopause: hormone fluctuations, increased fatigue, changes in sexual function, irritability and mood swings. Unlike menopause, however, the changes caused by andropause are often very subtle, stretching out over not just years but decades. If symptoms are noticed at all, most men just write them off as a normal product of aging.

Getting Back on Track
At our practice in San Diego, Low T is treated with an eye toward whole-body health. Not only is hormone replacement therapy utilized, but we also take a look at your entire lifestyle, including nutrition and exercise.

By focusing on bringing the entire body toward optimum health, not only are testosterone levels restored to a more highly functioning level, but other signs of andropause are resolved as well. Energy levels improve, sexual function returns full-force and your body redistributes fat and muscle in a more even ratio.

Hormone therapy can improve energy levels, return mental clarity and affect many other aspects of your life as well. The goal of male hormone replacement therapy is not only to resolve the symptoms of low T and andropause, but also to give you more youthful energy and vitality as you enter the next phase of your life.
